Why Choose Journalism As A Profession

“In America, the president governs for four years. Journalism reigns forever and ever” are the famous words from Oscar Wilde

“In America, the president governs for four years. Journalism reigns forever and ever” are the famous words from Oscar Wilde. “Journalism allows its readers to witness history” – John Stoppard. So also, “journalism keeps you planted in the earth” – Ray Danbury. Such are the fantastical attributes given to journalism by those in the know. Closer home, “The press is termed the fourth estate. It is power, but to misuse power is criminal” – Mahatma Gandhi. Thus, it is obviously incorrect to do something criminal. Hence, one should not misuse journalism. It is considered the guardian of society, the gatekeeper of ethics.

In the days of yore, the picture painted of journalists was that of do-gooders who were out to get themselves killed or nullified in their search for the truth. In the process they land up with a lower-than-average salary structure, erratic routine, and a constant humdrum in the background. This, does egg on the diehard philanthropists to join the journalist bandwagon. However, it does not give a welcoming grin to those that wish to live for their kith and kin or are ambitious enough to dream for themselves. As on date, India has over 1,00,000 newspapers including 38,000 weeklies and 380 television news channels (“India: Media Landscape”). The average salary for a journalist (one can consider a newbie) is about three lakh rupees per annum or approximately Rs 23,000 per month (“Ambition Box: Journalists Salary in India”). However, this ranks up to very high levels when the considered candidate proves his mettle and worth. Journalists that reach the status of editors of publications or channels and their ilk have huge net worth and amass great personal wealth. Added to this, the jewel in the crown is the privileged status they have in society. They are categorized in the creative class that nurtures, embellishes, and brings forth a shine to the times.

The cadre of journalists not only has an undeniable onus to be ethical and truthful, they also bring glitter and glory to their country by keeping the relevant authorities alert and fraud-free. Being a watch-guard gives no kicks as such to anyone. A journalist’s work helps our social grandeur to stay in touch and even get a better layer of sheen. And, to be practical, in these times of working-from-home, it is the journalistic creed that stands to win. One can write from anywhere, anytime. Thus, a to-be-mother can easily sit within the cozy confines of her home,
take care of the baby, and do some writing as well. So also, the entire personality of the journalist flowers with the power of the pen at their hands. Not only is one well conversant with the news updates of the entire planet, you get to make monies out of this odyssey too! Journalists have no retirement age, technically speaking. Even if they finish their terms in their respective organizations, they can get links for writing well past their prime. This is not a luxury anyone else from any other vocation is blessed with. The biggest plus point is the feel good factor that comes in with the realization that you are doing something to chug the wheels of change. Providing awareness to citizens about not just what is good for them but also how to beget narratives that will enable them to step out of their cocoons into the real world comfortably is the prime job of a journalist. He proffers the means to the ends, the pathway to success, and the roadmap to excel in the world. In this process, he himself sparkles and enables others to follow suit.
