What’s The Professional Worth Of A Bachelor’s Degree In Journalism & Mass Communication (BJMC)

The future depends on what you do today. So, all those students (and their parents too) who are looking for bright career opportunities ahead have to take a wise decision now. They must decide what educational course to do, to prepare them for  meaningful careers ahead.

A remarkable opportunity exists in the form of doing a Journalism and Mass Communication course. A degree in Journalism and Mass Communication will open many career doors. Some of the career prospects possible after finishing the course are

1.Reporters and Journalists—A major career option is to become a reporter covering areas like politics, business, fashion, crime or even niche reporting like environmental concerns. The reporters are responsible for researching informational news articles and stories about real life events using a fair and unbiased perspective. They may be required to interview experts and gather newsworthy information. They would also be responsible to spin the facts into interesting cohesive stories using suitable choice of words.

2.Advertising — Advertising is a fast paced, creative job. An advertising personnel is responsible for communicating a message to current customers or potential new customers. He or she plans the advertising campaign in conjunction with the Marketing Department. The advertising could involve different medias like Newspaper, Magazines, Radio, Television, Hoardings, Social Media or even Pamphlets and Banners. It would include media planning   , market research, brand management, content creation, client servicing etc.

3.Event Management – There are Corporate events which focus on business expansion and generating goodwill as well as Personal events like marriages, birthdays etc. An event manager oversees the design, set up and execution of the event for which everyone has gathered. It would mainly include deciding the details of venue, decoration, seating, confirming sponsors, arranging artists ( if entertainment is required ) and of course assisting in menu planning.

  1.   Public Relations- The PR department is responsible for sustaining and enhancing a good image of the company in the eyes of the public. In order to do that they have to establish and maintain good relations with the media. A career in Public Relations involves using all forms of Media and Communications to build, maintain and manage the reputation of clients. The PR person keeps the public informed about the activities of the organization, responds to press inquiries regarding controversial issues, pitches the media about specific corporate initiatives and disseminates information/ news release externally on behalf of the client.

 

5.Photographer- It is a very artistic field and could include specialized forms of photography like Weddings, Fashion, Industrial, Wildlife or even Photo journalism. They would be using a wide variety of photographic equipment to capture events, people, objects or scenes for records, art or commercial use. Their skill sets would include using photo editing software and having an eye for details, shapes, colours and forms. They would showcase their ability to narrate stories using photographs rather than words.
